Towards the end of my mentorship I conducted an interview with my mentor, Shiv Sachdeva. Below are bulleted reasons he had as to why he chose to become a prosecutor.

  • His love for criminal law

  • The prosecutorial clinics in law school

  • An internship at a District Attorney's office

  • The work done in court

  • The chance to handle many cases at once

  • The reward of winning a case

  • The reward of knowing justice has been served

  • The gratitude and happiness of the victims once a case is won

Why be a prosecutor?

Below is information from an article found on law.harvard.edu titled "Why prosecution?

"Prosecutors fill a unique role in the United States because of their primary responsibility in the courtroom is to ascertain the truth and seek justice. While defense attorneys are obligated to vigorously defend their clients whether guilty or not, prosecutors exercise the sovereign power of the state by representing the best interest of the community...One current prosecutor put it, 'The only obligation I have every day is to do the right thing.'"

This presents the argument that prosecution is a great career because as a prosecutor you present the truth and fight for the interests of the state in justice.

Unlike large private law firms, prosecution offers immediate opportunities for trial/litigation experience. Many new employees at District Attorney's offices will be offered cases almost immediately to give them trial experience. Prosecutors spend much of their time in court, which is not something a private lawyer can say regarding their career.
